Day 4: Oslo-Kongsberg-Heddal-Hardangerfjord, Ulvik
After breakfast, you'll drive along the Oslofjord, where Edvard Munch once had a studio, and into Telemark, one of Norway's most scenic districts. It's a landscape of contrasts and surprises, with winding valleys, precipitous gorges, silvery lakes, and snow-covered mountains. Then it's on to Heddal to visit its 12th-century triplenave stave church, Norway's largest. It's said the troll Finn Fairhair prodded five farmers to build the church-in three days! You'll next visit a 12th century Romanesque church in Seljord, which legend has it was built by a goblin. Then head for Morgedal, the birthplace of Sondre Norheim, a pioneer of modern skiing, before you ascend the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, a vast expanse of heath, lakes, and mountain peaks. After driving through mountain passes and tunnels, you'll arrive at Roedal, also famous for yet another stave church. After a stop at the thundering Latefoss Waterfall, which tumbles down the mountainside in a double avalanche before gently spraying the road, you'll proceed along the shore of the Sorfjord, a branch of the mighty Hardangerfjord. You'll cruise by ferry to Bruravik on your way to Ulvik, where you'll spend the night. [B/L/D]
Day 5: Ulvik-Gudvangen-Naeroyfjord-Flam-Bergen
After breakfast, you'll drive past the stunning Skjervet Waterfall. Later, you'll descend the hairpin turns of the famous Stalheim Canyon Road and through the Naeroydal valley's rainbowdancing waterfalls and sugarloaf-shaped mountains to Gudvangen. From there, you'll take a cruise on the Naeroyfjord and Aurlandfjord, arms of the Sognefjord, the world's longest and deepest fjord. You'll arrive in the hamlet of Flam, where you'll have lunch before boarding the famous Flam Railway. A marvel of Norwegian engineering, the railway ascends 2,845 feet in under an hour, while chugging through magnificent scenery. Arrive at Myrdal, where you'll transfer to the Bergen Railway for an equally breathtaking trip to Bergen. Dinner at your hotel in Bergen. [B/L/D]
Day 6: Bergen Embarkation
Your morning tour of the city will include a stop at Troldhaugen, former home of famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. The tour ends at the Hurtigruten pier, where you'll board your ship. [B/D]
Days 7-16: Norwegian Coastal Voyage
Your journey begins in Bergen, a thriving harbor town with a history of more than 900 years of seaborne trade. Established as a fishing village by Viking King Olav I in 1070, Bergen grew to become a leading Hanseatic League port. Some of the wooden warehouses you'll see along the wharf date back to the 14th century.
Your ship will then set course on a northbound passage to Kirkenes, an Arctic outpost near Norway's border with Russia, and back southward to Bergen, stopping at 34 unique and picturesque ports along the way. [B/L/D] Day 17: Disembarkation Bergen
Disembark and transfer to your hotel. Visit Mount Floyen and enjoy a farewell dinner. [B/L/D]
Day 18: Depart Bergen
Arrive in the U.S. Say your farewells before departing for the airport. [B]
